Scripture Union Daily Guide 9 October 2024 Outline:

From what we read about King Saul; he must have been an impulsive man. He acted on the spur of the moment. For example, he stopped the process of consulting with God’s priest when he heard the tumult of battle (vs.18-19); and he swore a rash oath without due consideration to its effect on his soldiers (v.24).

Unfortunately for King Saul, God took his words seriously because such oaths were uttered in His name. (We see the reason for this in 2 Timothy 2:13.) When God blocked the communication line, King Saul’s response was another rash oath (vs.38-39)! Thankfully, this God is a God of mercy.

He allowed common sense to prevail, and the king was stopped from compounding his folly by having his innocent son killed like the daughter of Jephthah (Judges 11:30-40). Note the admonition given to us in Ecclesiastes 5:2; Proverbs 20:25.
